20 Tips For A Better Resume
- Ensure there are absolutely NO spelling or grammatical errors.
- Use action verbs – like managed, launched, created, established.
- Avoid personal pronouns – NO ‘I’ or ‘me’.
- Highlight key points – emphasize by using bullets, italics, bold, sections, titles, etc.
- Keep it balanced and neat – use clear separate sections and emphasize titles, you want it to be easy to read.
- Use common section headings – like Experience, Education, Objective, Skills, etc.
- Relay clear objectives.
- Let an employer know why he needs you.
- Make a good first impression – employers spend less than 30 seconds on average scanning a resume so you need to draw them in with a 5 second glance.
- List recent and relevant information – keep everything in order of relevance as well – i.e. if you have been out of school for 10 years don’t list your education first.
- Emphasize skills – use keywords to highlight skills and experience.
- Utilize industry terminology – let them know you know what you are talking about.
- Quantify experience – nothing beats cold hard facts, provide quota information and statistics.
- Be organized, logical and concise.
- Communicate effectively – don’t use flowery wording to try to be impressive and avoid humor.
- Be honest – as always, the best policy.
- Sell yourself – be sure to emphasize your strengths and experience.
- Show Consistency – pay attention to detail, always use commas consistently and highlight section headings in the same manner, etc.
- Be Positive – attitude makes a difference.
- Stay with it – always be fine tuning your resume and keep it up to date on a regular basis, that way when you are in the market or someone approaches you with a good opportunity you will be ready.
